Charlie Longmire (b.2001) is a painter whose studio practice is based and interested in materiality and processed-based artmaking through the use of paper, found objects, discarded material and adhesives to create abstract motifs within a composition. He explores the informal representation of materiality in both its intentional and unintentional capability to form paintings. Charlie manipulates imagery through the deliberation of entropy and its proficiency to display a sense of disorder and undefined representation. This idea connects with materiality by informing a relationship of understanding of texture, colour and positive and negative space within the picture plane.
Central to his practice is enabling initial ideas to be subconsciously modified and coherently infused into unanticipated compositions, embracing the aspects of accidents and mutations that are present throughout the artmaking process.
Through collaged features of paper, found objects, discarded material and adhesives this extends the medium from the traditional use of paint on canvas into a painting construction. Entropy and materiality hold his artistic practice as an anchor point that allows him to bridge the gap between unconventional and conventional mark making, slowly layering and celebrating the element of surprise. In doing this, Charlie communicates that through the course of creating an image, the consistent effort of taking away, adding and repositioning source material through the conscious means of creation, is inherent with those purposeful actions to physically apply a mark onto a surface that primarily comes down to deliberation.

Charlie Longmire acknowledges the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation on which I live and work, and pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
